The Story of Adam and Eve
Bible Reference: Genesis 3:1-24
Story:
The story of Adam and Eve’s fall begins in the Garden of Eden, where God had placed them to live in perfect harmony with Him and each other. They were given everything they needed: beautiful surroundings, freedom, and the command to enjoy the garden and tend to it. The only command God gave them was not to eat from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, for if they did, they would surely die.
However, the serpent, who was more cunning than any of the animals God had made, approached Eve and asked her why they couldn’t eat from every tree in the garden. Eve explained that they could eat from all the trees except the one in the middle, for God had told them not to eat or touch it, lest they die.
The serpent, however, lied and said, "You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it, your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." Eve, tempted by the serpent’s words and seeing that the fruit was good for food, pleasing to the eye, and desirable for gaining wisdom, took some of the fruit and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, Adam, who was with her, and he ate as well.
At that moment, their eyes were opened, and they realized they were naked. They felt ashamed and covered themselves with fig leaves. When they heard God walking in the garden, they hid from Him. God called out to Adam, "Where are you?" Adam responded that he was afraid because he was naked, so he hid. God asked, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?"
Adam blamed Eve, and Eve blamed the serpent. God then pronounced a series of consequences:
-
The serpent would be cursed to crawl on its belly and eat dust, and there would be enmity between the serpent and the woman, with her offspring ultimately crushing its head.
-
To Eve, God said that He would greatly increase her pain in childbirth, and her desire would be for her husband, who would rule over her.
-
To Adam, God said that the ground would be cursed because of him, and that he would toil and struggle to eat from it all his life, until he returned to the dust from which he was made.
Despite the consequences, God showed mercy. He made garments of skin to clothe Adam and Eve, showing His care even in their fallen state. God then banished them from the Garden of Eden, placing cherubim and a flaming sword to guard the way to the Tree of Life, so they could no longer access it and live forever in their fallen state
